The Last Straw

I dedicate this comic to my friend, Brett Rittenhouse.
Brett is a living Brannock Device but for carbon (footprint) shoe sizes. The original Brannock Device is a measuring instrument invented by Charles F. Brannock and is the industry standard for measuring a person’s shoe size.
Looking to buy a truck? Brett will warn you that you’ll have some big shoes to fill and carbon footprints they’ll leave behind.
You’ve probably heard the headlines about Starbucks eliminating straws in their coffee shops by 2020. I’m sure Brett is happy they are taking this step to reduce their corporate carbon shoe size. But how did straws become outlaws?
It was this video shot by marine biologist Christine Figgener and her team removing a plastic straw stuck in a sea turtle’s nose in August 2015.
The video went viral on social media and prompted Starbucks to change its strawful ways. Several companies have since followed Starbucks’ lead in announcing plastic straw bans.
Somewhere Brett is smiling. I mean he smiles a lot anyway.
