The Clown Fish

The Clown Fish

I dedicate this comic strip to my aunt, Betty Schmitt.

I know a lot of people fear clowns these days. My Aunt Betty (pictured above) gave me an appreciation for them. Frank Sinatra also sang, Send in the Clowns.

I think I first heard about the iconic clown, Emmett Kelly.

As a young man Kelly actually studied to become a cartoonist, and created the Weary Willie as a cartoon character. He then worked at various jobs in and around the circus. He taught himself trapeze (How do you go about doing that?) and was hired as a trapeze artist. In 1923 he brought his cartoon character of the sad hobo to life as a clown. Kelly joined Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1942 and was a featured act there until the late 1950s.

I dunno, maybe someday I’ll bring my cartoon character of Sharky to life… people have a fear of sharks, too.
